The name of the new NHL franchise will be the Seattle Kraken. The Kraken are set to begin play in the NHL in the 2021-22 season. They will play at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. It will be the 32nd franchise in the NHL, coming just a couple years after the Vegas Golden Knights began play.

In the teams announcement of its branding, they released this graphic:

Seattle Kraken Announced as New Franchise

When the Kraken begin playing they will be in the Pacific Division and the Arizona Coyotes will be moving to the Central Division.

The rules for the expansion draft will be the same as it was for the Golden Knights. However, it’s not locked in yet what specific date that draft will take place, but it will be in June 2021.

So far the new team name has been fairly well-received on social media. Of course, there’s always going to be blow back when a team has a new name. Especially one that involves a mythical creature. However, the overall branding of the team seems to be pretty popular.
