Clayton Kershaw was set to start Opening Day once again for the Los Angeles Dodgers but will instead be hitting the Injured List. The cause of his trip to the injured list is a back injury. The announcement came down just hours before the team is set to start its season against the Giants.
Clayton Kershaw Heading to the Injured List
Kershaw heading to the injured list at the start of the season shouldn’t be too concerning for the Dodgers. However, what does make this concerning is it’s a back injury. Back injuries can tend to be a finicky injury and Kershaw has a history of back injuries.
The good thing for the Dodgers is that first, this is happening at the start of the season. But also, with the announcement of a 16-team playoff, it’s nearly a guarantee the Dodgers will be in the postseason. They have after all won the National League West seven seasons in a row, and are favored to do so again.
Los Angeles also has other pitchers that can step in. Namely, Walker Buehler, who is an ace-caliber pitcher and will be the future ace for the franchise.
So while Los Angeles won’t have its ace for the start of the season, likely for at least a few weeks, they still have other players who can step up and carry the load. And as long as they have him in top form for the postseason, nothing else truly matters. Nobody is doubting the ability of the Dodgers to make the postseason, but if they want to win their first World Series since 1988, Kershaw will have to be in top shape.
