Oregon came into the 2021 recruiting cycle knowing that they needed to pickup at least one tight end and even more than likely two. They have gotten the ball rolling on that with a commitment from four-star prospect Moliki Matavao out of Henderson, Nevada.
Matavao ranks as a top-five tight end nationally in the 247 Sports composite rankings and he sits at seventh in their own rankings and in either one he’s around 150-160th nationally in overall prospects and he’s a consensus four-star.
What has the scouting services so excited about Matavao is his height and overall length. He stands at 6’6″ and weighs 240 LBS, according to 247 Sports. He combines that size with very good athleticism that has the potential to cause some real problems at the college-level as a matchup for defenses when it comes to linebackers or safeties trying to defend him.
As mentioned, Oregon desperately needed to pickup at least one tight end in this class and even more so they likely will look to sign two. The current coaching staff in Eugene has clearly done a great job on the recruiting trail, but one of the main positions they’ve struggled to get commitments from has been tight end.
This commitment vaults Oregon from 21st to 14th nationally in the 247 Sports team rankings, but as has been the case, when it comes to per commitment rating, they are towards the top of the country and comfortably inside the top-ten.
Matavao is the ninth commitment in this class for Oregon, with eight of those being four-star prospects.
