Angels outfielder Mike Trout, having only played nine seasons of Major League Baseball, is already a bonafide legend who has been said by many to be the greatest ballplayer of his generation.

His legend grew on Wednesday, as his autographed Bowman Draft Chrome Prospect card was sold for a whopping $900,000 at auction. The card was made and sold in 2009, making it by far the most valuable baseball card ever produced in the modern era. It has tied the record for the most expensive modern sports card ever, alongside the Lebron James/Michael Jordan logoman card, which also sold for $900,000 in February.

Mike Trout has already made a solid Hall of Fame case across his nine-year MLB career, winning the Rookie of the Year Award, making eight All-Star Game appearances, winning three Most Valuable Player awards (most recently in 2019), and slashing an impressive .305/.419/.581 in those nine seasons. Many argue that he’s already a surefire Hall of Famer, and that he’s already among the greatest players in the history of the game.

Given Mike Trout’s developing legacy as an all-time great, and given the fact that last year the now famous Trout card was sold for only $400,000, there is little doubt that the most valuable modern baseball card ever will, over time, become one of the most sought-after pieces of memorabilia in baseball history.
