Thursday evening, the XFL joined the rest of the major American sports leagues by ending play, in response to the coronavirus outbreak.
In recent days, the NBA, NHL, MLS and Major League Baseball had all suspended or postponed play in order to prevent the spread of the virus. The NCAA has canceled all winter and spring sports, including March Madness and the College World Series.
However, the XFL is canceling the remainder of the season, not postponing. The league was halfway through its inaugural season, with five weeks of play to go.
The league cancels play with the Houston Roughnecks leading the league with a 5-0 record. Eight teams make up the league.
Currently, the XFL will not be playing its regular-season games. However, all players will be paid their base pay and benefits for the 2020 regular season. All XFL ticket holders will be issued refunds or credit toward future games. The XFL is committed to playing a full season in 2021 and future years.
The league made it clear they intend to resume play in 2021.
