A Huge Fourth Quarter Leads the Mavericks Past the Timberwolves

After a strong first quarter, the Mavericks struggled a lot of the night with the Timberwolves. However, Dallas was able to put it together in the fourth quarter to pull out a 121-114 win. This win came on what felt like an off night for Luka Doncic. Which of course meant he still went for 22 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.

The most interesting part was that the bench was able to take over the lead in the fourth, and Rick Carlisle left them in after they started to separate themselves, longer than most would’ve thought. That showed a great amount of trust in a bench unit that has frankly earned it.

The Mavericks Beat the Timberwolves With a Strong Fourth Quarter

The Bench Closing it Out

This bench deserves so much credit. A lot of attention goes to Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis, and understandably so. They are the two best players, and the team mostly goes as those two go.

However, this is a bench unit that can’t be overlooked. This is a good unit and this is a deep team.

Tonight it was Jalen Brunson, going for 14 points in the fourth quarter, and Maxi Kleber went for 12 points and five rebounds on the night. Kleber also hit a couple of big threes to get Dallas going after they really struggled from distance in the first three quarters.

Also, the fact that Carlisle would leave them in so long into the fourth quarter says all you need to know about what he thinks about them. While they were playing great and had gotten the lead, the game was far from over.

Dwight Powell With a Huge Night

It was the best game of the season for Dwight Powell, and that’s not really debatable. The only thing that didn’t go right for him was that he left the game in the fourth quarter with a left arm injury. However, Rick Carlisle did come out and say that x-rays were negative and it was a contusion. With Dallas having two days off before their next game, it’s possible he could play in the next game.

Outside of that, it was an amazing night for Powell. He went for 24 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two blocks. Not only was he so productive across the board, but he finished 9/9 shooting, 2/2 from three and his only miss of the night came because he was 4/5 from the free-throw line.

That level of production isn’t something to be expected from Powell on a nightly basis. However, if he is going to play anything like that, it’s going to be huge for this team.

It’s especially huge for them to get this type of performance on a night when Doncic struggled to get things going like normal. It also continues to show the depth of this team.

The Mavericks Beat the Timberwolves: Overall Thoughts

This was another game that Dallas should’ve taken care of, but Minnesota isn’t a horrible team, being led by Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins. It was also the second of a back-to-back when the team had to travel.

It wasn’t too surprising to see them struggle through most of this game. However, good teams find a way to win these types of games. Especially on their home floor, and that’s exactly what Dallas did.

Next up Dallas will continue their homestand, with games against the Pelicans and Kings on Saturday and Sunday.
