Rafael Devers is enjoying a real breakout season, and last night he did something that nobody has done in the modern era. Last night against the Cleveland Indians, the Boston Red Sox third baseman went 6-for-6 with four doubles and three RBIs.
This performance put him in a tie with Nicholas Castellanos for the major league lead in doubles. It also put him in the lead for hits in the major leagues, with 158.
Rafael Devers’ Historic Performance
Not only is this an elite performance, but it was historic. Devers became the first player in the modern era (since 1900) to have a game with this stat line.
What made this historic was the four doubles. Since 1908, only 20 players have had a game with at least six hits. To go with that, only 20 players in that same span have had a game with at least four doubles. But pairing those two together had yet to be done.
Devers has been huge for the Red Sox this season. In a season that looks like the Red Sox are going to miss out on the postseason after winning the World Series last season, the team at least knows it has a franchise cornerstone at the hot corner.
Devers already has a career-high in home runs, RBIs and hits. He is now working towards some milestones. He has a great chance at reaching 30 home runs and could easily reach 35. He’s also closing in on 100 RBIs, and after a previous career-high of 108 hits, he’s sitting at 158 after last night, giving himself a real chance at getting to 200, which is a big deal.
Again, the Red Sox are not having the season they thought they were going to have going in, but Devers has been a real bright spot in this season for Boston.
