Braves Trade for Chris Martin

Yesterday the Atlanta Braves acquired relief pitcher Chris Martin from the Texas Rangers in exchange for left-handed pitcher Kolby Allard.

This trade addresses a need that Atlanta had in the bullpen. Martin has an ERA this season of 3.08 and he has posted an impressive 43 strikeouts to four walks.

For Atlanta, giving up Kolby Allard isn’t ideal, but they do have a talent-rich system when it comes to pitching, so giving up Allard is something that the Braves can afford to do. Especially since it fills a need they had in the bullpen in a season where they have been leading the division for most of the season.

For Texas, this is also great. Allard has struggled in limited time in the major leagues so far this season, but he’s talented. On top of that, he’s only 21 years old and the Rangers have plenty of team control over him.

Chris Martin is a talented reliever, but having him for the rest of the season really does them no good, and adding a starting pitcher the level of Allard does do them a lot of good.
