The New England Patriots have signed 32-year old wide receiver Julian Edelman to a two-year extension that will guarantee him $12 million, but could be worth up to $18 million. The deal also includes a signing-bonus of $8 million. The deal was first reported by Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.
Edelman is a three-time Super Bowl champion with the Patriots and in this years Super Bowl win against the Rams Edelman was named the Super Bowl MVP after going for 10 catches and 141 yards.
This deal was an easy one for the Patriots to make. Edelman has been a staple with the Patriots since being drafted by the team in the seventh-round of the 2009 draft and he has put up two 1,000 yard seasons and this past season he put up 850 yards in only 12 games after he missed the first four games with a PED suspension.
Tom Brady has always had a reliable receiver to throw the ball to in the slot, and while Wes Welker was great and Danny Amendola was nice, Edelman has been the best of them and he has been the best receiver that Brady has worked with since Randy Moss.
Edelman is about to turn 33-years old so it’s not crazy to think this could be his last contract, but he has done a great job of keeping himself in top shape and every season he has continued to be productive. He is only one catch away from 500 in his career and he has put up 30 career touchdowns while catching two out of every three passes thrown to him for his career.
It’s now expected that the Patriots will try and take care of Tom Brady with a new contract after Edelman has been taken care of as the Patriots go all in for a seventh Super Bowl title during the Brady Era.
