Lakers Hire Frank Vogel

The Los Angeles Lakers are set to hire Frank Vogel as their next head coach according to multiple reports, after somewhat of a mess of a coaching search that felt like they were going to hire Ty Lue, before he decided to back out.

Ultimately though, landing on Vogel is not the worst thing that could’ve happened for the franchise. In six seasons as the head coach of the Indiana Pacers, the team made the playoffs five times, making it to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2013 and 2014 and in the 2013 run they took LeBron James’ Miami Heat to seven games in the conference finals.

While serving as the head coach in Indiana, Vogel posted a record of 250-181 and he had a playoff record of 31-30.

After being fired by the Pacers in 2016, Vogel was quickly hired by the Magic, where he would serve as the head coach for only two seasons before being fired after going 54-110. After being fired by the Magic after two seasons Vogel sat out this season from coaching.

Not only does Vogel have eight years of head coaching experience in the NBA despite only being 45-years old, almost 46, but he also has eight years of experience as an assistant, taking over as the Pacers head coach on an interim-basis in his last season as an assistant for the Pacers.

Vogel has also spent time in Boston and Philadelphia as an assistant coach, so he has spent all of his time coaching in the NBA in the Eastern Conference and now he will be making his way to the Western Conference.

Overall Vogel has been a pretty good NBA head coach, but this is a different scenario. He will now be coaching LeBron James, which of course is something that can be very fickle for a head coach.

What kind of relationship Vogel has with LeBron or is able to develop with LeBron will likely determine his success or failure as the head coach of the Lakers. The ability for them to land another star this offseason will also play a huge factor because after this season it’s clear that the Lakers will need to make some adjustments to the roster because the chemistry was shot by the end of the year and it’s hard to imagine it will get better.

The relationship with LeBron James is why a lot of people, myself included, believed that Ty Lue would eventually be the head coach of this team, but that wasn’t the case. I think they definitely got a better head coach by the hiring of Vogel, but as I mentioned the relationship with LeBron and him getting LeBron to buy into his message will be everything for him and this team going forward and it’ll be very interesting to watch.
