Coming off of an American League Cy Young award and on the precipice of being a very special pitcher for a very long-time, the Tampa Bay Rays have given an extension to their ace, Blake Snell.
The extension is going to be for five-years and $50 million.
This past season Snell lead all of baseball with 21 wins and he lead the American League among qualifying pitchers with a 1.89 ERA. He also lead the American League in hits allowed per nine innings. Snell also struck out 221 batters this past season and posted a career-high 7.4 WAR.
Blake Snell was set to make just under $600,000 this season and now his new contract will rip that up and he will be getting a significant pay raise.
For the Rays this was the right thing to do. Snell is clearly the face of the franchise for a team that has been looking for one for a few years now and now they don’t have to worry about arbitration and Rays fans will have a star player to grasp on to, which could help get more people to Tropicana Field.
It’s also good to see the Rays spend money on one of their stars to try and keep him in a market that traditionally doesn’t spend money.
