Chiefs Release Eric Berry

Eric Berry has been one of the key pieces of the Chiefs franchise during his nine seasons in the league. So much so that the Chiefs signed him to a six-year extension before the 2017 season that included $40 million guaranteed. That contract never panned out as Berry has only played three games over the past two seasons and as a result the Chiefs are going to release him, in a not-so-surprising move.

He will be a post June 1st release, clearing $9.55 million in cap space for this season, but they’ll also be responsible for a good chunk of dead cap space over the next couple of seasons.

Although dead cap space is never a good thing, everyone could see that it was time for the Chiefs and Berry to move on. Berry just hasn’t been able to stay healthy, so nobody really knows what level he can still play at because he pretty much hasn’t played in two full seasons.

The good thing for Berry is that he’s still going to end up with the $40 million that he was guaranteed, although I’m sure he’d still like to have been on the field the past two seasons.

Kansas City brought in Tyrann Mathieu and he will be the obvious replacement for Berry.

Berry had a very interesting career in Kansas City. He was a three-time All-Pro in nine seasons and he really only played five full seasons, because of multiple injuries and then him beating cancer and being named the 2015 Comeback Player of the Year, which was a kick ass moment for anyone who is an NFL fan regardless of fan allegiance.

As a football fan, you hope that Berry has something left in the tank, but it’s hard to imagine that he has much left, although you’d expect him to be able to find a likely one-year deal somewhere, but it was just time for Kansas City to move on, and as tough as that probably was for the team, this is a business.
