Former five-star defensive end Jaelan Phillips announced earlier this off-season that he was going to enter the transfer portal. Phillips announced during this past season at UCLA that he was going to take a leave from the team because of injuries, but now he has decided that he is going to transfer to Miami to play for Manny Diaz.
During his true freshman season at UCLA in 2017, Phillips was productive for a freshman, getting to the quarterback for 3.5 sacks and seven tackles for loss.
Overall Phillips struggled to get his footing at UCLA and a lot of that was due to injuries, but the talent of Phillips is obvious, which is why he was given five-stars coming out of high school.
Manny Diaz has made some very good inroads using the transfer portal since he became the head coach at Miami earlier this off-season and even though Phillips didn’t live up to his five-star billing at UCLA, a change of scenery can always be beneficial for people and if you’re Miami it doesn’t hurt to take a shot on Phillips and the physical talent he has.
