Mack Brown has done a great job of recruiting since he took over at North Carolina and today he added another gem, in the form of four-star wide receiver Josh Downs. Downs is a very interesting prospect.
What makes Downs an interesting prospect is that he’s not very big, being listed at 5’10”, 165 pounds, but even with his lack of elite size, Downs does a really good job of going up and getting jump balls and he’s able to do that because he does a really good job of positioning his body while the ball is in the air.
He also has very good speed that is obvious when you watch his film. He is able to take a screen or any quick pass and weave through the defense and get a lot of yards after the catch. He also uses that speed to separate himself from defenders while the ball is in the air.
He looks very experienced while the ball is in the air because of the way he can position his body and use his speed to almost push off and separate from defenders without actually pushing off.
Downs is the fourth four-star recruit to commit to the Tar Heels in the 2020 class and the second wide receiver, joining Ray Grier.
